Outlook 2016 Journal — Alternative Options

Microsoft have been trying to retire the Journal since Outlook 2007 — even then you had to manually enable Journal (with a discouraging popup). In Outlook 2016 Microsoft have finally turned it off.

Fortunately, 12 years ago the Qlockwork time tracking add-in for Outlook was created to be a better alternative to Journal and it remains an excellent, fully supported option used by companies across the globe.

Qlockwork vs Journal

Let’s do a head-to-head comparison of Journal features vs Qlockwork features.

  • Journal: All data appears in Outlook (in the Journal timeline view).
  • Qlockwork: All data appears in Outlook (in the Calendar view).
  • Journal: Automatically records open time in Office documents like Word and Excel.
  • Qlockwork: Automatically records active time spent in all applications, not just Office.
  • Journal: can manually add activities.

Journal was a niche function of Outlook used mostly by lawyers, consultants and other folk who charged for their time (like us actually). Microsoft prefers Office features that are used by absolutely everyone and they’ve retired Journal. Here at WorkingProgram, Qlockwork is what we do. We’re old-time Microsoft developers and we believe a Journal alternative provides extremely useful functionality.

  • We designed Qlockwork to work with the Calendar view because we think it’s a better user interface than the timeline view (it also remains supported by Microsoft).
  • We designed Qlockwork to record everything because not all your billable work is in Office.
  • We designed Qlockwork to only record your time if you’re actively working on a document because sometimes you need to grab your lunch or leave an application open in the background.

We believe Qlockwork is not just an alternative to Journal, it’s a better alternative.

If you’d like to try out Qlockwork as an alternative to the Outlook 2016 Journal we have a free 10 day trial and we’re always happy to chat about the product by email (info@workingprogram.com), twitter @qlockwork or Facebook

Our industry veteran CEO Anne Currie is also happy to talk to you. Qlockwork was her first invention and it will always be her favourite.
